Why Is Ageing Hard to Talk About?
Ageing is a natural part of life, yet it can be a difficult topic for many. Why?
1. Fear of Mortality
Ageing brings us face-to-face with our own mortality, which can be uncomfortable to acknowledge.
2. Social Stigma
In a youth-oriented society, ageing often feels like something to hide, creating feelings of invisibility.
3. Loss of Control
Ageing can bring changes beyond our control, like health decline or loss of independence, making it tough to talk about.
4. Denial
We sometimes avoid the topic because it forces us to confront difficult truths, such as needing help or changing our lifestyle.
5. Guilt and Burden
Older individuals often feel guilty about needing help, worried they are burdening loved ones.
6. Lack of Education
Ageing isn’t something many are taught how to talk about openly, leading to avoidance instead of conversation.
At St Simeon Healthcare, we believe in embracing the ageing process with open conversations and compassionate care. Ageing isn’t something to fear or hide—it’s a stage of life that deserves support and understanding.

A Story of Connection and Growth at St Simeon Healthcare
At St Simeon Healthcare, our gardens and veggie patch are more than just green spaces—they’re a source of joy, health, and connection for our residents, families and visitors. Gardening is a timeless activity that nurtures the mind, body and soul, offering countless health benefits.
We’ve seen firsthand how a little dirt under the nails and some time spent with nature can transform a person’s day. One resident, Magda, had always loved gardening but hadn’t had the chance to tend to her garden for years. When she moved to St Simeon Retirement Village, she didn’t expect much beyond a comfortable and safe space to call home. But something unexpected happened: she rediscovered the joy of nurturing plants.
With the help of our staff, Magda was shown our beautiful garden and veggie patch. It wasn’t long before she was out there every morning, hands in the soil, planting new seeds and watching her little patch of earth come to life. The joy she found in her garden became contagious—soon, other residents joined her, as they exchanged gardening tips.
Magda’s story is just one of many. Gardening isn’t just about growing plants; it’s about growing connections, building community, and finding peace in the simplicity of nature.

10 Signs Your Parent or Grandparent May Need Extra Help
Aging is a natural part of life, and as our parents or grandparents grow older, certain signs may indicate they need additional support. Recognising these signs early can make a big difference in ensuring their safety and well-being.
Here are 10 key indicators your loved one might need help at home:
1. Increased Forgetfulness: Misplacing items, missed appointments, or memory lapses.
2. Unexplained Confusion: Difficulty understanding tasks or conversations.
3. Decline in Hygiene: Neglecting personal care routines.
4. Changes in Eating Habits: Skipping meals or weight loss.
5. Clutter and Cleanliness Issues: A once tidy home becoming messy or unsafe.
6. Neglected Bills: Unopened mail or missed payments.
7. Decreased Mobility: Trouble walking or getting up from a chair.
8. Unexplained Bruises: Signs of falls or accidents.
9. Mood and Behaviour Changes: Increased irritability, sadness, or withdrawal.
10. Loss of Interest in Hobbies: Abandoning activities they once loved.
These small changes can add up, signaling it might be time to step in and offer support. By observing their behaviour and spending more time together, you can identify potential issues before they escalate.
Remember, aging doesn’t have to mean losing independence. With the right care and support, older adults can continue to lead fulfilling lives at home. If you notice these signs, consider discussing your concerns with your family doctor to explore the best options for their care.
Contact us today your loved ones deserve to age with dignity and comfort—let’s help them do just that.

Streamlining Aged Care Assessments
From today, 9 December 2024, there are positive changes to how older Australians will be assessed for aged care services. The new Single Assessment System workforce will bring together multiple existing aged care assessment workforces, providing older Australians with a more streamlined and flexible pathway to access the care they need.
Key Changes
1. Triage Delegates
A new role of Triage Delegates will ensure referrals are addressed within two weeks.
These clinically qualified professionals will prioritise cases, ensuring older Australians with complex needs receive comprehensive assessments while those with lower needs avoid unnecessary over-assessment.
2. Clinical and Non-Clinical Assessors
The new system allows seamless transitions between clinical and non-clinical assessors based on individual needs.
Non-clinical assessors can consult clinical assessors via phone or video for questions requiring clinical expertise.
If immediate consultation isn’t possible, a clinical assessor will follow up promptly.
What Remains Unchanged
- Aged care eligibility requirements and in-hospital assessments will stay the same.
Referrals, urgent services, and reassessments will continue through the current My Aged Care process.
- Assessments will still be conducted in person at home or in hospital.
- Residential aged care funding assessments will occur after the older person has settled into residential care.
For more information about the Single Assessment System, visit the My Aged Care website.
At St Simeon Healthcare, we remain committed to supporting our new and existing residents, home care consumers, and their families through these improvements to ensure timely and appropriate care for all. If you are looking into an aged care provider and need help to understand the changes, contact us today.

A Milestone for Aged Care
We’re thrilled to share that the Aged Care Act has recently passed, marking a significant step forward for older Australians. This new law ensures the voices of older people are front and centre in the aged care system, delivering much-needed protections and rights
Key highlights include:
- Independent complaints mechanism, ensuring fairness and accountability.
- Enforceable rights, strengthening the dignity and autonomy of older people.
- Right to visitors at all times, supporting connection and companionship.
- Hardship protections, safeguarding financial well-being.
It’s also encouraging to see the Government remove proposed caps on cleaning and gardening services, vital supports many older Australians depend on. Additionally, new measures ensure transparency in care delivery, with full wait times for services and clear complaint resolution timeframes to be published.
Finally, parliament has secured the 2% accommodation retention rate, ensuring any future changes must be approved through parliamentary processes.
At St Simeon Healthcare, we’re committed to helping you navigate these changes. Contact us anytime for guidance or support—we’re here to help!

Self-Funded Retirees: Don’t Miss Out on Home Care Packages
Did you know being a self-funded retiree doesn’t disqualify you from accessing a Home Care Package? Eligibility isn’t based on financial status alone. However, an income assessment by Services Australia determines your contributions toward care costs.
Key Points to Know
1. Income-Tested Care Fees: These are calculated based on your finances and reduce the government subsidy on your package. Fees are capped annually and count toward a lifetime cap (currently $79,942.44), after which no further income-tested fees apply.
2. Level of Care Matters: For lower-level packages (e.g., Level 1), fees may exceed subsidies. Higher-level packages (Levels 3 or 4) offer greater financial relief by covering more care costs.
3. Early Allocation Benefits: Starting with a lower package can help you reach the lifetime fee cap sooner, reducing long-term costs as your care needs grow.
Self-funded retirees can benefit significantly from Home Care Packages—contact us to learn how to navigate the process and maximise your support. We’re here to help!
