A New Era for Aged Care in Australia
The recent agreement on a rights-based Aged Care Act marks a pivotal moment for Australia’s aged care sector. This new legislation, born out of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety's top recommendation, promises to deliver long-term improvements and financial sustainability to the industry.
As Australia's population continues to age, the demand for quality aged care is growing rapidly. The new Act is a significant step towards ensuring that older Australians receive the high levels of care they deserve, while also addressing key financial challenges faced by providers.
With this new legislation, aged care providers can look forward to a more stable and sustainable future, with reforms aimed at increasing financial security and enabling investment in new facilities. Over the next two decades, it’s anticipated that an additional 10,000 new beds will need to be opened annually to meet the needs of our ageing population. The new Act will pave the way for the necessary investments to make this a reality.
At St Simeon Aged Care, we are excited about the potential of this legislation to strengthen the sector and create a more vibrant, efficient aged care system for all Australians. By supporting these reforms, we can work together to build a world-class aged care system that not only meets but exceeds expectations.
This is a promising start to a brighter future for aged care!

In aged care, estate planning can be a challenging and emotional process, but early preparation can make all the difference for you and your loved ones. Start by ensuring you have key documents in place, such as a valid will, enduring power of attorney, and binding death nominations. These legal tools ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes and that someone you trust can manage your affairs if needed.
With the rise of digital assets, it's important to securely document passwords and account details for online banking, email, and social media. Additionally, discussing funeral preferences can help ease the burden on your family during an already difficult time.
If you’re the adult child of an ageing parent, asking vital but respectful questions about estate planning can help streamline the process. These include inquiries about wills, powers of attorney, and plans for medical decisions.
At St Simeon Healthcare, we understand the complexities of estate planning and support our community in preparing for the future. By taking these steps, you can alleviate stress and ensure peace of mind for everyone involved.
Do you have a loved one that it is needing either residential or home care, contact us today and we are more than happy to discuss options that may be available to you.

In Australia, according to data form the ABS and KPMG approximately 130,000 people retired in 2022, with the average retirement age being around 64.8 years. It is projected that the trend of retirement will continue at similar rates.
Retirement opens up a whole new chapter in life. While the idea of unstructured days may seem thrilling, it can also feel a little daunting. Therefore, what is the key to a fulfilling and happy retirement? Staying active—both mentally and physically! Here’s how to make the most of your golden years and thrive after retirement.
Why Staying Active Matters
When we retire, we leave behind the daily routines and social interactions that come with work. Without realising it, many of us depend on that structure to keep us engaged and connected. By staying active and continuing with new routines, retirees can keep their minds sharp, their bodies strong, and avoid the risks of isolation.
Physical & Mental Health Benefits
Engaging in regular physical activities such as walking, gardening, swimming, golf, Pilates, strength training or gentle exercise classes can maintain strength, flexibility, and overall health. Staying active also supports brain health—picking up a new hobby, like painting or learning a language, can help keep the mind agile and prevent cognitive decline.
Stay Socially Active
Staying socially active is vital. Join a local group, rediscover or start a new hobby, take part in community activities, or even volunteer—this keeps you connected and builds a sense of belonging.
Travel
Whether it’s a weekend road trip or a dream cruise, travel keeps life exciting! Just remember to plan for different climates and stay comfortable and safe along the way.
Volunteer & Give Back
Volunteering is a wonderful way to stay active and give back to the community. It can be incredibly fulfilling, whether you’re mentoring, volunteering at St Simeon Healthcare, helping at a local charity, or even working with animals. Plus, it’s a great way to meet new people!
At St Simeon Healthcare we encourage all of our residents and home care consumers to stay active and engaged. From wellness programs to social activities, we’re here to support you in making the most of this exciting chapter!

Addressing the Impact of Incontinence
A recent report by Deloitte Access Economics has revealed the economic and social costs of incontinence in Australia, reached $100.4 billion in 2023. This includes $66.6 billion in direct healthcare costs and an additional $33.8 billion in lost wellbeing for the 7.2 million Australians living with the condition. Among those affected, over 65% are women, and incontinence is particularly prevalent in aged care homes, where over 70% of residents experience some form of it.
Despite its prevalence, incontinence remains a sensitive and often embarrassing topic for many. However, with the right support and care, we can improve the quality of life for millions of elderly Australians, reducing the significant economic and social costs associated with this condition.
How St Simeon is Making a Difference
1. Our trained staff ensure that residents and home care consumers receive the support they need in a discreet and respectful manner, addressing both physical and emotional well-being.
2. We work with residents and their families to create personalised care plans that consider the individual's level of incontinence and overall health. This includes the use of appropriate continence aids, toileting programs, and skin care routines to promote comfort and prevent complications.
3. One of the biggest barriers to effective incontinence care is the stigma associated with the condition. At St Simeon Healthcare, we foster open conversations, encouraging residents, homecare consumers and their families to discuss their concerns without shame. By normalising these conversations, we aim to reduce the emotional burden that often accompanies incontinence.
4. Our staff undergo continuous training to stay up-to-date with the latest incontinence management techniques. This ensures that residents receive the highest standard of care and that our team is equipped to handle the complexities of the condition with professionalism and compassion.
Through these efforts, we are contributing to reducing the significant economic and social impact this condition has on individuals and society as a whole.
