New National Dementia Action Plan: A Brighter Future for Australians Living with Dementia
In December 2024, the Australian Government introduced the National Dementia Action Plan 2024-2034, a significant step forward in improving the lives of people living with dementia and those who care for them.
Dementia affects over 411,000 Australians, with around 1.6 million people providing care. Alarmingly, more individuals are being diagnosed at younger ages, including those under 50. This plan seeks to address these challenges through a comprehensive and compassionate approach.
Key Goals of the Plan
1. Better Diagnosis and Treatment: Ensure early and accurate diagnosis and provide access to effective treatments.
2. Enhanced Care and Support: Improve services for people living with dementia and their families, ensuring they receive the care they need.
3. Support for Carers: Offer carers better tools and services to help them provide quality care while managing their own well-being.
4. Workforce Training: Equip healthcare professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to deliver dementia care with compassion and expertise.
5. Research and Innovation: Invest in understanding dementia, improving data collection, and fostering innovation in care solutions.
6. Public Awareness and Inclusivity: Tackle stereotypes, raise awareness, and create inclusive communities for people living with dementia.
7. Risk Reduction: Help Australians understand how to reduce their risk of dementia and delay its onset or progression.
At St Simeon Healthcare, we wholeheartedly support this action plan. The governments vision aligns with our mission to deliver compassionate, high-quality care that empowers individuals and their families.
Together, we can reduce the impact of dementia and improve the quality of life for those affected.

Older People at Risk from Hot Weather: Simple Strategies for Keeping Cool
As temperatures rise, older people face a higher risk of heat-related illnesses, such as dehydration and heat stroke. Here is some practical advice to stay safe and comfortable during summer.
Why Are Older Adults More at Risk? With age, the body becomes less efficient at regulating temperature, and underlying health conditions or certain medications can increase vulnerability to heat stress.
Simple Strategies to Stay Cool
1. Stay Hydrated Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as they can contribute to dehydration.
2. Dress for the Weather Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-coloured clothing. Natural fabrics like cotton are excellent choices.
3. Keep Living Spaces Cool Use fans or air conditioning where possible, and close curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day. Ventilate in the evening when it’s cooler.
4. Avoid Peak Heat Hours Stay indoors or in shaded areas during the hottest parts of the day (usually 11 AM to 4 PM). If you need to go outside, wear a hat and use sunscreen.
5. Cool Down Physically Take cool showers or baths, or place a damp cloth on your neck, wrists, and forehead to lower your body temperature.
6. Check In Regularly If you’re a family member or caregiver, check in with older loved ones regularly to ensure they are managing the heat well.
At St. Simeon Healthcare, we encourage everyone to take heat safety seriously. Small actions can make a big difference in protecting the health and well-being of older adults during hot weather.
If you’d like more information or support, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

A Clearer Path to Quality Care: Understanding Star Ratings
Did you know St Simeon Healthcare holds a 4-star rating for our residential aged care home? This achievement reflects our commitment to delivering high-quality care and continuously improving for our residents and home care clients.
What Are Star Ratings?
Star Ratings help older Australians, their families, and carers compare aged care homes across the country. Each home receives a rating (1 to 5 stars) based on:
1. Residents’ Experience: Independent feedback on overall satisfaction.
2. Compliance: Ensures homes meet standards for safe, quality care.
3. Staffing: Measures care provided by nurses and carers.
4. Quality Measures: Tracks indicators like falls, weight loss, and medication management.
These ratings provide transparency, helping families make informed decisions about care.
Why Star Ratings Matter
Star Ratings enhance transparency and accountability, empowering families to choose the best care. As Anita, our Operations and Finance Manager, says:
“With Star Ratings, you can compare care providers and make confident decisions. That clarity is so powerful.”
Our Commitment to Excellence
At St Simeon Healthcare, our 4-star rating reflects the respect, safety, and kindness we provide to our residents every day. While proud of this achievement, we remain focused on continuously improving and exceeding expectations.
Looking for trusted care? Choose St. Simeon Healthcare, where quality is always our priority.

The Future of Aged Care
As the world’s population ages, the aged care sector is on the brink of transformation. At St Simeon Healthcare, we are passionate about staying ahead of the curve to ensure that our residents and home care consumers continue to receive exceptional care. But what might age care look like in the future?
Experts envision a future where technology and person-centred care converge to create more empowering and enriching environments for older adults. Here are some key trends shaping this future:
1. Smart Homes and Assistive Technology The integration of smart home technologies is set to revolutionise how older adults maintain their independence. Features like voice-activated assistants, fall-detection sensors, and automated lighting systems will enhance safety and convenience. For instance, companies like CarePredict are developing wearable devices that track subtle changes in daily habits to predict potential health issues.
2. Robotics and AI in Care Delivery Robotic companions, such as the therapeutic robot Paro, are already providing emotional support to residents with dementia. AI-driven tools are also helping caregivers optimise care plans by analysing data to anticipate health needs, reduce loneliness, and improve overall well-being.
3. Community-Based Living Innovative aged care models like “dementia villages” in the Netherlands and Australia showcase how community living can promote autonomy and reduce social isolation. These purpose-built villages are designed to feel like small towns, where residents can shop, dine, and engage in activities while receiving tailored support.
4. Holistic Health Approaches The future of aged care will likely focus on holistic well-being, combining physical, mental, and spiritual care. Programs incorporating art therapy, music therapy, and intergenerational activities are gaining traction as effective ways to foster connection and joy.
5. Personalised Care Through Genomics and Precision Medicine Advancements in genomics may pave the way for personalised care plans based on an individual’s unique genetic profile, allowing for more effective interventions and better management of chronic conditions.
At St Simeon Healthcare, we are excited about these developments and committed to incorporating innovative approaches into our services. Our goal is to provide care that not only meets the needs of today but anticipates the needs of tomorrow.

Meet Lisa. She's a home care worker at St Simeon Healthcare, and her day is anything but ordinary.
Lisa starts her mornings with a workout at the gym and then grabs a coffee on her way to her first home care client. She arrives at Mrs Carter’s house around 8:30 AM. Mrs. Carter, a kind-hearted woman in her 80s, is already up and dressed, but needs a little help with breakfast and her medications.
After checking in on her physical needs, Lisa sits down with Mrs Carter and this is where the real magic happens—because it's not just about what’s on the to-do list, but also about creating a connection. Mrs Carter talks about her grandchildren and next-door neighbour, who will visit her later. Lisa listens, knowing that for many of the people she cares for, a good conversation is just as important as any physical task.
From there, Lisa heads to Mr Nikolic’s house. Mr Nikolic’s mobility isn’t what it used to be, so Lisa helps him with his morning exercises. They finish the session by walking around the block.
Lisa’s day isn’t just about checking off tasks—it’s about making sure each person she visits feels seen, heard, and valued. She helps with personal care, daily tasks, and ensures everyone gets the attention they deserve.
At St Simeon Healthcare, we’re proud to have a team of people like Lisa. If you want to make a difference and bring that same sense of care and purpose to someone’s life, we want to hear from you.
✨ Join our team today and become the difference in someone’s day. ✨

Aging Well: Embracing the Journey 🌻
What does it mean to age well? At St Simeon Healthcare, we understand that aging well goes beyond physical health—it’s about nurturing the whole human - body, mind, and spirit.
Take Mrs Carmen, a 86-year-old resident with a rich history. When Carmen first came to St Simeon healthcare, she was managing a few age-related health conditions, including arthritis and hypertension. However, her most pressing concern was staying active both physically and mentally.
Our team at St Simeon Healthcare worked closely with her family to create a personalised care plan, ensuring she received the medical attention she needed while also prioritising her physical well-being.
Carmen also participated in our tailored exercise programs to manage her arthritis, strengthening her muscles and improving her mobility. She enjoyed our cognitive stimulation activities, which included light reading and puzzles, helping her maintain mental agility.
Six months into her stay, Carmen showed steady progress. Not only had her physical health improved, but she had also formed close friendships with other residents, and her sense of belonging had greatly lifted her spirits. Her smile became a familiar sight during daily social gatherings.
Carmen’s story is a testament to the importance of aging well—maintaining physical health, nurturing emotional connections, and fostering a sense of purpose and belonging. At St Simeon Healthcare, we are dedicated to walking alongside each individual, empowering them to age with dignity, receive compassionate care, and they actively participate in decisions about their well-being.
Aging well is not just about living longer—it’s about living better, together.
